About

OUTBOX started from one observation: some questions get louder the harder you try to answer them.

Most tools respond. They analyse, explain, rate, reassure. That can feel like relief for a few minutes, and then the question comes back wanting a slightly better answer.

OUTBOX is built to do the opposite. You write the thought. It goes. Nothing comes back.

What the research says

Reassurance seeking tends to keep anxiety going. Research at the University of Oxford found that, for people with OCD, reassurance brings short-term relief but is followed by a longer-term return of discomfort and the urge to seek more reassurance. This matches why OCD-focused CBT (including response prevention) is recommended by NICE as the first-line treatment in the UK: the goal is to break the reassurance loop, not feed it.

Writing thoughts down can slow the loop. A UK study in the British Journal of Health Psychology (Northumbria University) showed that written emotional expression reduced state anxiety immediately, and trait anxiety and perceived stress four weeks later. Putting a thought into words creates a little distance, making it easier to step back rather than chase another answer.

How OUTBOX addresses both

OUTBOX is designed around these two findings. Instead of offering reassurance, analysis, or a better answer, it gives your thoughts somewhere to go — and then lets them leave.

No reassurance means no reinforcement. When you send a thought to OUTBOX, nothing comes back. There is no rating, no reassurance, no interpretation. The absence of a response interrupts the cycle that keeps reassurance-seeking alive.

Writing it down creates the distance. The act of putting the thought into words — and then letting it go — can slow the urge to keep checking, arguing, or solving. The page becomes a place to set the thought down rather than chase it.

Our principles

Nothing is stored
What you write stays on your device and disappears when you send it or refresh the page.
No reassurance
We will never tell you your fear is unfounded, or that you’re safe. We don’t know, and neither does certainty-seeking.
No engagement loops
No accounts, no streaks, no notifications, no history. Success looks like you closing the tab.
Nobody is watching
OUTBOX is not a crisis service. Nothing you write is sent anywhere and no human reads it. The only thing that looks at your words is a simple safety word-check running in your own browser, so it can offer you support options.

OUTBOX is a wellbeing tool, not a medical service or a substitute for professional mental-health care. It does not treat, cure or prevent OCD, anxiety or any other condition. If you would like help, see Get support.
